A colleague referred a client for x-rays the other day. And when he turned up for his appointment he was told by the radiographer that my colleague ‘was not a real doctor anyway’. It’s disappointing to see this attitude still exists. Isn’t it a shame when this perception prevents medicine and complementary medicine from working together to give people the best possibility for healing and recovery?
Thankfully there are many within the medical profession who understand the benefit of working together. In fact a few years back I enjoyed having a GP as a client. He came to me for help with headaches when he didn’t want to medicate himself. And psychiatrist Professor Graham Martin speaks candidly on how he combined chiropractic and acupuncture with his medical care to help himself heal. His wonderful podcast illustrates his story of hope and his personal experience as a patient with sudden paralysis due to inflammation in his spinal cord.
And only yesterday I read a media release from surgeon Dr Valerie Malka (previous Director of Trauma Services for Westmead Hospital and Sydney West Area Health Service for over a decade.). I have the utmost respect for her brilliance in accident and emergency medicine and her openness to the role we both play in helping people heal.
